Workshop One

The first workshop will take place at St Hilda's College in Oxford, 14th-16th August 2024.

This workshop will address the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of Old Norse emotion research. The following topics will be addressed:

  • Bodily Signs: Gestures and Somatic Indicia (George Manning)
  • Linguistic Approaches to Old Norse Emotion (Teodoro Manrique Antón and Edel Maria Porter)
  • Action/Performance and its Emotive Functions (Rebecca Merkelbach)
  • Emotion Words (Kristen Mills)
  • Historical Approaches to Old Norse Emotion (Katherine Olley)
  • Literary Approaches to Old Norse Emotion (Sif Ríkharðsdóttir)
  • Reading Emotion in Epigraphic Sources (Alexander Wilson)
